Dental crowns: protecting and restoring your teeth
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits completely over a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its strength, shape, and appearance in a reliable, long-lasting way.
Crowns are typically recommended when:
- A tooth is cracked, heavily worn, or fractured
- Significant decay leaves too little healthy tooth structure for a filling
- The tooth needs protection following root canal treatment
- The crown forms the visible portion of a dental implant
- Aesthetic improvement is needed, whether that's shape, colour, or contour
Crown pricing at Core Dental Group Glenferrie: from $1,400 (depending on material and complexity). A written treatment plan is provided before any work begins, so you know exactly what to expect.
Crown material options
| Material | Appearance | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Zirconia | Very good – natural colour | Back teeth; strength + aesthetics |
| Porcelain/Ceramic | Excellent | Front teeth; aesthetics |
| Gold/PFM | Good | High-force back teeth; bruxism |
Your dentist will recommend the most suitable material based on the tooth's location, the bite forces involved, and your aesthetic priorities.
Standard crown process (2 appointments)
- Appointment 1: Tooth preparation; digital scan or impressions; temporary crown placed
- Fabrication: 2–3 weeks in the dental lab
- Appointment 2: Permanent crown fitted, adjusted, and cemented
Dental bridges: replacing missing teeth
A dental bridge fills the gap left by one or more missing teeth with a fixed, non-removable restoration. Artificial replacement teeth, known as pontics, are held in place by crowns on the adjacent teeth or on dental implants.
Why it's worth addressing a missing tooth sooner rather than later:
- Prevents neighbouring teeth from drifting into the gap
- Prevents the opposing tooth from over-erupting
- Helps maintain jawbone density at the extraction site
- Restores chewing function and the appearance of your smile
Bridge treatment follows the same two-appointment process as a standard crown.

CEREC same-day ceramic crowns at Core Dental Group
Core Dental Group practices equipped with CEREC technology give patients the option of having a permanent ceramic crown designed, milled, and fitted in a single appointment, with no temporary crown and no second visit required.
How CEREC works: the 5-step process
Step 1: Digital impression Rather than traditional impression putty, your dentist uses an optical intraoral scanner to capture a precise 3D digital image of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. The scan takes just a few minutes and is considerably more comfortable than conventional impressions.
Step 2: CAD design Using CEREC software, your dentist designs the custom crown on screen, specifying the exact shape, contacts, and bite relationship. The design can be refined to closely match your natural tooth shape and sit precisely within your bite.
Step 3: Milling The digital design is sent to the CEREC milling unit, which carves the crown from a solid ceramic block in around 15–20 minutes. The ceramic material comes in a wide range of tooth shades to match your natural teeth.
Step 4: Glazing and characterisation Once milled, the crown may be glazed or further characterised to achieve the best possible aesthetics and a lifelike surface texture before placement.
Step 5: Fitting and bonding The finished crown is tried in your mouth, any minor adjustments are made, and the crown is permanently bonded to your tooth. The entire process, from preparation through to placement, is completed in a single appointment of around 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
Benefits of CEREC same-day crowns
- Single appointment: No temporary crown needed; no second visit for fitting
- No temporaries: Avoids the discomfort and inconvenience that can come with temporary crowns, which can loosen or cause sensitivity
- Precise digital fit: Digital impressions and CAD design deliver highly accurate margins and contact points
- High-quality ceramics: CEREC blocks are made from high-strength dental ceramic with excellent aesthetics and durability
- Immediate protection: The affected tooth is permanently restored and protected on the same day
- Convenient: Particularly useful for patients who can't easily take multiple days off work, or who are visiting from interstate
Is CEREC right for your crown?
CEREC works well for most crown cases, particularly on posterior (back) teeth. For anterior (front) teeth where exceptional aesthetics are the priority, a laboratory-fabricated crown from our ceramist team may deliver better cosmetic outcomes in more complex cases. Your dentist will talk through the most appropriate approach at your consultation.
