How Invisalign works

Invisalign uses a series of custom-made, removable clear aligner trays to move teeth progressively into position. Each set is worn for one to two weeks before you move to the next.

Compared to traditional braces, the main practical differences are that aligners are virtually invisible, removable for eating and cleaning, and have no brackets or wires. The ClinCheck software shows your projected result before any aligner is made, so you know what you're signing up for.

The Invisalign process at Core Dental Bayside:

  1. Complimentary consultation with Dr Andres Aguirre to assess suitability
  2. Digital iTero scan — precise and comfortable, no impressions
  3. ClinCheck simulation — see your projected result before treatment starts
  4. Custom aligners fabricated and delivered
  5. Progress appointments every 6–8 weeks
  6. Retainers provided at completion

Aligners need to be worn 22 hours a day, removed only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and cleaning your teeth. Average treatment runs 12–18 months, though this varies by case complexity.

Invisalign for teens

Invisalign Teen is available at Core Dental Bayside with a couple of features built around younger patients. Wear compliance indicators — blue dots that fade to clear with use — confirm the aligners are being worn as required. Spare replacement aligners are also included for the occasional lost or damaged tray. The system works for most common orthodontic issues in teens.

Price match guarantee

Core Dental Group will beat any comparable written quote from a registered specialist orthodontist for Invisalign treatment by 5%. Bring your written quote to your consultation.

Invisalign aftercare: caring for your aligners

Starting Invisalign is straightforward once you know the basics. Here's what you need to get the best results from your treatment.

Wearing your aligners

Aligners need to be worn for a minimum of 22 hours per day, removed only for eating, drinking anything other than plain cold water, and cleaning your teeth. Wearing them for less than 22 hours can extend your treatment timeline.

Inserting your aligners

Each aligner is labelled with a number and "U" (upper) or "L" (lower) so you always know which is which. To insert, push the aligner over your front teeth first, then apply equal fingertip pressure at the back until it clicks into place. Don't bite aligners in — that can damage them.

Aligner Chewies

Use Aligner Chewies for 10 to 15 minutes each day, particularly in the first few days of a new aligner. These small soft plastic rolls help seat the aligner fully against your teeth for optimal fit and tooth movement. Move the Chewie around your mouth as you bite down on it.

Removing your aligners

Start at the back teeth on one side, gently tug the aligner free with your fingertips, and work your way around to the other side. Take extra care if you have attachments — the small tooth-coloured bumps placed on certain teeth to assist with movement.

Eating and drinking with aligners

Always remove aligners before eating or drinking anything except cold water. Food and coloured drinks stain aligners and raise the risk of decay. Before reinserting after eating, brush and floss, or at minimum rinse your mouth thoroughly.

Cleaning your aligners

Clean aligners before each insertion using cold water and a soft toothbrush without toothpaste. Soaking in cool water with a teaspoon of white vinegar, or using Aligner Brite cleaning tablets, removes stains and bacteria effectively. Never use hot water, denture cleaners, or mouthwash — these can damage the plastic.

Storing your aligners

When they're not in your mouth, keep aligners in their provided case. A tissue or pocket is a reliable way to lose or break them.

Managing discomfort

Mild pressure for the first few days after switching to a new aligner is normal — it means the aligners are working. It usually settles within two to three days. Over-the-counter pain relief can help if needed.

Speech

Some people notice a slight temporary lisp when they first start wearing aligners. It typically resolves within a few days as the tongue adjusts, and regular speaking speeds that up.

Mouthguards during Invisalign treatment

Aligners are not designed for impact protection, so you still need a proper mouthguard for contact sport during treatment. Core Dental Group makes custom-fit mouthguards at a discounted rate for active Invisalign patients.

How often do aligners change?

Your provider at Core Dental Group will outline your specific schedule. Depending on your treatment plan, aligners may change every five days, weekly, or every two weeks.
