Invisalign aftercare: caring for your aligners
Starting Invisalign is straightforward once you know the basics. Here's what you need to get the best results from your treatment.
Wearing your aligners
Aligners need to be worn for a minimum of 22 hours per day. Remove them only for eating, drinking anything other than plain cold water, and cleaning your teeth. Wearing them for less than 22 hours a day can extend your treatment timeline.
Inserting your aligners
Each aligner is labelled with a number and "U" (upper) or "L" (lower) so you always know which is which. To insert, gently push the aligner over your front teeth first, then apply equal fingertip pressure at the back teeth until it clicks into position. Don't bite your aligners into place — that can damage them.
Aligner Chewies
Use Aligner Chewies for 10 to 15 minutes each day, particularly in the first few days of a new aligner. These small soft plastic rolls help seat the aligner fully against your teeth for optimal fit and tooth movement. Move the Chewie around your mouth as you bite down on it.
Removing your aligners
Using your fingertips, start at the back teeth on one side and gently ease the aligner free, working your way around to the other side. Take extra care if you have attachments — the small tooth-coloured bumps placed on certain teeth to assist with movement.
Eating and drinking with aligners
Always remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything except cold water. Food and coloured drinks can stain the aligners and raise the risk of decay. Before reinserting after eating, brush and floss — or at minimum rinse your mouth thoroughly.
Cleaning your aligners
Clean your aligners before each insertion using cold water and a soft toothbrush without toothpaste. Soaking in cool water with a teaspoon of white vinegar, or using Aligner Brite cleaning tablets, removes stains and bacteria effectively. Never use hot water, denture cleaners, or mouthwash — all can damage the plastic.
Storing your aligners
When not in your mouth, store aligners in their provided case. Don't leave them in a tissue or pocket, where they can be accidentally thrown out or damaged.
Managing discomfort
Mild pressure for the first few days after switching to a new aligner is normal — it means the aligners are working. It usually settles within two to three days. Over-the-counter pain relief can help if needed.
Speech
Some people notice a slight temporary lisp when they first start wearing aligners. It typically resolves within a few days as the tongue adjusts, and regular speaking helps speed that up.
Mouthguards during Invisalign treatment
Your aligners aren't designed for impact protection, so you still need a mouthguard for contact sport during treatment. At Core Dental Group, custom-fit mouthguards are available at a discounted rate for active Invisalign patients.
How often do aligners change?
Your Core Dental Group clinician will outline your specific aligner change schedule. Depending on your treatment plan, aligners may change every five days, weekly, or every two weeks.
