Core Dental Group Root Canal Treatment at Core Dental Bayside

Root canal treatment gets a bad rap. In reality, the procedure relieves pain rather than causes it. Core Dental Group, through Core Dental Bayside opening June 2026, will offer comfortable, effective root canal treatment for patients across the Bayside, Bentleigh and Brighton corridor.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment (also called endodontic treatment) saves a tooth that has become infected or severely damaged at its pulp — the soft tissue at the centre containing nerves and blood vessels.

When bacteria reach the pulp through deep decay, a crack, or trauma, infection develops. Left untreated, that infection can spread to surrounding bone and tissue. Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals, and seals the tooth to prevent reinfection.

The result: your natural tooth is saved. That's always the better outcome — nothing replaces a natural tooth as well as keeping it.

Is root canal treatment painful?

This is the most common misconception. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you should feel no pain during treatment, only pressure. The discomfort patients experience before their appointment comes from the infection itself, not the treatment. Most patients feel relief immediately after root canal therapy.

For anxious patients, nitrous oxide is available to make the experience more manageable.

The root canal process

  1. Assessment — X-rays confirm the extent of infection and the anatomy of the root canals
  2. Anaesthetic — the tooth and surrounding area are thoroughly numbed
  3. Cleaning — the infected pulp is removed and the root canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected
  4. Sealing — the canals are filled with a biocompatible material (gutta-percha) and sealed
  5. Crown — strongly recommended to protect the restored tooth from fracture

Root canal treatment typically requires 1–3 visits. Complex cases may be referred to a specialist endodontist.

Frequently asked questions

Will root canal treatment hurt? No. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. Any pain before treatment comes from the tooth infection itself — root canal therapy relieves that pain.

How long does root canal treatment take? Most treatments are completed in 1 to 3 appointments. Single-root teeth can often be done in one visit; multi-root teeth or complex infections may need additional appointments.

Do I need a crown after root canal treatment? In most cases, yes. Removing the living pulp leaves the remaining tooth structure more brittle. A crown significantly reduces the risk of fracture and extends the tooth's lifespan.

Can I eat normally after root canal treatment? Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your permanent crown is placed. Once crowned, normal eating and function can resume.
