## Wisdom Teeth Removal at Core Dental Carrum Downs

**Core Dental Carrum Downs | Suite 4, 335 Ballarto Rd, Carrum Downs VIC 3201 | (03) 8373 1555 | carrumdowns@coredental.com.au**

If you are experiencing pain, swelling, or difficulty at the back of your mouth, your wisdom teeth may be the cause. Core Dental Carrum Downs offers expert wisdom tooth assessment and gentle removal services at our fully accessible, ground-floor practice near Carrum Downs Shopping Centre. We have 8 dedicated on-site car spaces and a team committed to making your visit as comfortable as possible.

### What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop - typically erupting between the ages of 17 and 25. Most people have four wisdom teeth (one at each corner of the mouth), though some have fewer or none at all. Because they erupt after the jaw has fully formed, there is often insufficient space for them to emerge properly.

### When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. Your dentist at Core Dental Carrum Downs will assess your wisdom teeth with digital X-rays and a clinical examination, and will only recommend removal when there is a genuine clinical reason. Common indications include:

- **Impaction** - The wisdom tooth is trapped in the jawbone or gum tissue, unable to fully erupt
- **Repeated infection** - Pericoronitis (infection of the gum flap over a partially erupted tooth) causing pain and swelling
- **Decay** - In the wisdom tooth itself or the adjacent second molar, in a position that is very difficult to clean
- **Cyst formation** - Around an unerupted wisdom tooth
- **Persistent pain or pressure** in the back of the jaw

Early assessment before age 25 is recommended - removal is generally easier and healing is faster for younger patients.

### What to Expect at Core Dental Carrum Downs

**Simple and partially impacted extractions** are carried out in our dental chair under local anaesthetic. You will be comfortable and pain-free throughout. For patients with dental anxiety, we offer happy gas (nitrous oxide) to take the edge off.

**Complex impacted wisdom teeth** - particularly those with roots close to the inferior alveolar nerve or requiring surgical access - will be referred to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon for removal under general anaesthetic in a hospital day surgery setting. Medicare rebates may apply for surgical procedures. Your dentist will advise you clearly on which option is appropriate and arrange the referral if needed.

### After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Recovery is usually straightforward. Here is what to do after your procedure:

- Take the rest of the day off to rest
- Apply an ice pack to the outside of your jaw for the first few hours
- Do not smoke for at least 72 hours - this greatly increases the risk of dry socket
- Avoid straws, alcohol, and very hot liquids for 48 hours
- Eat soft, cool foods for the first few days
- Start gentle warm salt water rinses 24 hours after the extraction
- Take medications as prescribed

Healing is usually complete within a few days to one week for simpler cases. If you notice severe pain returning 2-3 days after the extraction, please call us - this could be dry socket, which is treatable.
