Dentists are actually amongst the most qualified people to perform facial injectable treatments. Their detailed knowledge of facial anatomy, nerve pathways, and musculature, combined with years of hands-on experience delivering precise injections, puts them in a strong position to achieve safe, natural-looking results. At Core Dental Group's Carrum Downs practice, Dr Anna Lai offers facial injectable treatments for both cosmetic enhancement and therapeutic dental applications.

What are facial injectables?

Facial injectables use botulinum toxin (commonly known as anti-wrinkle injections), delivered through precise injections into targeted facial muscles. Depending on where the injections are placed and the dosage used, the effects can address cosmetic facial rejuvenation or treat muscle-related dental and jaw conditions.

Cosmetic facial injectables

For cosmetic purposes, anti-wrinkle injections can smooth forehead lines and frown lines between the brows, soften crow's feet around the eyes, provide a subtle brow lift, and relax lines around the mouth and chin, leaving the face looking more refreshed overall.

Results generally start to show within 5–14 days and last around 3–4 months, after which a top-up treatment can be arranged. Dr Anna Lai takes a measured approach — the aim is to look refreshed, not frozen.

Therapeutic dental injectables: TMD and bruxism

Facial injectables have a well-established role in managing dental conditions that involve the jaw muscles.

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD): TMD can cause jaw pain, clicking or popping of the jaw joint, headaches, earache, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth. When more conservative treatments such as a night splint or physiotherapy haven't provided enough relief, injections into the masseter muscles (the primary chewing muscles) can reduce pain and jaw tension by lowering muscle hyperactivity.

Bruxism (teeth grinding/clenching): Bruxism is one of the most common causes of tooth wear, cracked teeth, jaw pain, and morning headaches. Injectables into the masseter and/or temporalis muscles reduce the force of grinding and clenching, protecting teeth from further damage and easing associated tension headaches.

Masseter reduction: Ongoing clenching can cause the masseter muscles to hypertrophy (enlarge), producing a square, wider-looking jawline. Therapeutic injectables gradually reduce masseter bulk, softening the lower face whilst also reducing bite force.

Dr Anna Lai — facial injectables provider

Dr Anna Lai (BSc Biomed, DDS Melbourne) leads the Core Dental Group Carrum Downs team and provides both cosmetic and therapeutic facial injectables. Her dental background gives her a precise, well-grounded understanding of the facial musculature and anatomy involved in these treatments. She takes a thorough, individualised approach, starting with a detailed consultation to understand your goals and medical history before any treatment proceeds.

What to expect

Your first injectable appointment begins with a consultation. Dr Lai will talk through your goals (whether cosmetic, therapeutic, or both), review your medical history, and walk you through expected results and any relevant considerations. The treatment itself is quick, typically 15–30 minutes, using very fine needles to keep discomfort to a minimum.

After treatment, you can head straight back to your normal routine. It's worth avoiding strenuous exercise, lying flat, or rubbing the treated areas for a few hours following the procedure.
