Sleep Dentistry and Sedation at Core Dental Epping
Dental anxiety is more common than you might think - and at Core Dental Epping, we believe that fear should never stand between you and a healthy smile. Our sleep dentistry and sedation options allow even the most nervous patients to receive the dental care they need in comfort and calm.
You Don't Have to Fear the Dentist
At Core Dental Epping - Your Local Dental Practice - we have helped countless anxious patients receive the dental treatment they need, comfortably and safely. Located at Tenancy 3B/230 Cooper St, Epping VIC 3076 (just a 10-minute walk from Epping Station), our practice is equipped to manage dental anxiety at every level.
Sedation Options at Epping
Nitrous Oxide (Happy Gas)
Nitrous oxide - often called happy gas or laughing gas - is a mild, safe sedation option that helps you relax while remaining fully conscious. You breathe the gas through a small nose mask, feel pleasantly calm within minutes, and the effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed. Nitrous oxide is suitable for patients of all ages, including children.
Benefits of nitrous oxide:
- Fast-acting and easily reversed
- You remain awake and able to communicate
- No recovery time - you can drive yourself home
- Safe for children and adults alike
Sleep Dentistry (IV Sedation)
For patients with severe dental anxiety, multiple complex procedures, or a strong gag reflex, sleep dentistry under IV sedation may be the right choice. Under IV sedation, you enter a deeply relaxed state with little or no memory of the appointment. A specialist anaesthetist, registered nurse, experienced dentist and dental assistant are all present throughout.
Sleep dentistry is suitable for:
- High dental anxiety or dental phobia
- Patients requiring extensive or multiple procedures
- Strong gag reflex
- Needle phobia
- Limited jaw opening
Laser Dentistry - Another Reason to Relax
Core Dental Epping is the only Core Dental location offering laser dentistry. For many patients, the sound and sensation of a traditional drill is a major source of anxiety. Laser dentistry can reduce or eliminate the need for drilling in many procedures, making treatment quieter, more comfortable, and often faster.
Laser dentistry applications at Epping include:
- Gum recontouring and reshaping
- Soft tissue procedures
- Cavity treatment in selected cases
- Improved precision and reduced bleeding in gum procedures

Frequently Asked Questions
Am I a suitable candidate for sleep dentistry? Sleep dentistry (IV sedation) is suitable for most adults with significant dental anxiety, multiple complex treatments needed in one session, needle phobia, strong gag reflex, or difficulty sitting for long periods. A pre-treatment medical assessment determines suitability. Contact us to discuss your individual circumstances.
Will I be unconscious during sleep dentistry? IV sedation induces a deeply relaxed, twilight state - most patients have little to no memory of the procedure. It is not full general anaesthesia, so you remain able to respond to instructions, but you will be entirely comfortable throughout.
How soon can I return to normal activity after sedation? You will need a responsible adult to drive you home and should rest for the remainder of the day. You should not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for at least 24 hours. Most patients feel normal by the following day.
Does health insurance cover sleep dentistry? Coverage varies by fund and policy. The dental treatment performed is typically claimable under your dental cover. Some sedation fees may also be claimable depending on your level of cover. Check with your fund or speak to our team for guidance.
