Wisdom tooth pain is one of the most common reasons people end up in the dental chair as an emergency. At Core Dental Group Epping, we're set up to assess and treat wisdom tooth problems quickly and without fuss. We're near Pacific Epping Shopping Centre, about 10 minutes' walk from Epping Station, and open until 6:00 pm Monday to Friday.
Understanding wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth are the third molars — the last teeth to come through, usually somewhere between 17 and 25. By that point, the jaw has already finished developing, which means there's often not enough room for them to erupt properly. They can come through partially, at an angle, or not at all.
When wisdom teeth need to come out
We take a thorough look before making any recommendation. Removal is generally considered when:
- A wisdom tooth is impacted — stuck beneath the gum or pressing against the second molar
- You're dealing with recurring pericoronitis — an infection of the gum flap over a partially erupted tooth
- The tooth has significant decay that can't be effectively restored
- There's a risk to the neighbouring tooth through pressure or decay spread
- A cyst or other pathology is developing around the tooth
- You're getting repeated pain, swelling, or infections in that area
Getting screened before age 25 generally means a simpler procedure and faster recovery — it's worth not waiting until things become more serious.
How wisdom teeth are removed at Epping
Simple to moderate extractions are done in the dental chair under local anaesthetic. Our team works hard to keep you calm and comfortable throughout. We also offer sleep dentistry for patients who'd prefer to be sedated.
Complex impacted wisdom teeth — those involving bone removal or difficult root positions — may need to go to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon for day surgery under general anaesthetic. Medicare rebates may apply in some cases. Your dentist at Core Dental Group Epping will give you a clear recommendation and handle the referral.
Recovery tips
How long healing takes depends on the complexity of the procedure. Simple extractions typically settle within a few days; more involved procedures may take one to two weeks.
Key aftercare steps:
- Rest for the remainder of the day
- Apply an ice pack to your jaw for the first 24 hours (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)
- No smoking for at least 72 hours — this significantly raises the risk of dry socket
- Avoid straws and alcohol for 48 hours
- Stick to soft, cool foods for several days
- From 24 hours onwards, rinse with warm salt water two to three times daily
- Take any prescribed antibiotics or pain medications as directed
If severe pain comes back two to three days after the extraction, get in touch promptly — this can be dry socket, which needs treatment.

Post-extraction aftercare instructions
How you care for your mouth after an extraction has a real impact on how well and how quickly you heal. Some swelling and discomfort are normal. Following the steps below carefully helps keep these to a minimum.
If you're having any difficulties, call Core Dental Group on 13 13 16.
Ice packs
Many patients find applying ice packs over their cheeks helpful in the first few hours after surgery. A bag of frozen peas wrapped in a cloth works just as well as a purpose-made pack. Apply for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off during the first 24 hours.
Numbness
The anaesthetic will leave your lips, tongue, and cheeks numb for some hours afterwards. Take care not to bite these areas while sensation hasn't fully returned.
Swelling
Swelling is a normal part of your body's response to oral surgery and is often related to how involved the procedure was. It typically peaks around 24 to 36 hours after surgery, then starts to ease. In most cases, it has reduced noticeably after four to five days.
Bruising
Some bruising may appear as the swelling goes down. This is very common following oral surgery and isn't a cause for concern.
Bleeding
If bleeding occurs, use the gauze provided or a clean knotted handkerchief to apply firm, direct pressure to the extraction site for at least one hour. It's worth placing towels over your linen or pillow overnight. If bleeding continues or you're concerned, get in touch with us.
Discomfort
Some discomfort is normal after an extraction. Take pain relief regularly — avoiding aspirin, which can increase bleeding — ideally before the anaesthetic wears off. Most patients feel considerably more comfortable within two to three days.
Oral care
Day 1: Don't rinse, spit, or use a straw on the day of the extraction. Any of these actions can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the socket, which slows healing and can lead to dry socket.
From day 2 onwards: Warm salt water mouth rinses — half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water — every four hours help promote healing and keep the socket clean.
Diet
Keep to soft foods initially. Your mouth may not open as wide as usual for up to a week due to swelling, but this gradually improves. Work back to normal foods as healing progresses.
Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 48 hours after the extraction, as both slow down healing considerably.
Infection
Infection is uncommon after a routine extraction. If it does occur, it usually shows up as increased swelling, discomfort, or some discharge around three to four days after the procedure. If you were prescribed antibiotics, complete the full course even if you're feeling fine.
Stitches
Dissolvable stitches, if placed, will fall out or dissolve on their own within about seven days. If non-dissolvable stitches were used, we'll arrange an appointment to have them removed.
Issues with healing
If your discomfort is getting worse in the three to four days following your extraction rather than improving, contact us so we can assess the healing site. Call Core Dental Group on 13 13 16.
